Alright ladies, let’s address some pretty controversial topics when it comes to the natural hair world and protective styles. Let me warn you in advance that this might get spicy. From avoiding heat to wearing weaves, you decide what works best for your hair. I am just here to share some knowledge and I am definitely not here to judge.
MYTH 1 – YOU DON’T NEED A PROTECTIVE STYLE
Instead of wearing a protective style, many of women enjoy heat styling their hair, including myself. I used heat styling all summer. I loved the way my hair looked and felt after a Dominican blowout! However, by the end of the summer, my thinning, heat damaged hair let me know that I had made the wrong choice. Heat must be limited on our very fragile, natural hair. Especially with 4C hair, which is the most fragile hair type. I understand the struggle but keep looking for alternatives to heat. There are lots of ways to style 4C hair with little to no heat, which is where protective styling comes in handy. Protective styling is also great for preventing breakage in the winter.
MYTH 2 – BRAIDS AND WEAVES DAMAGE YOUR HAIR
Now this myth really ruffles my feathers because it is wrong and yet so widely believed. As long as you care for your hair while it’s in braids and weaves, your hair will not become damaged. Lack of care damages your hair. If you wash your hair and moisturize your scalp while in these styles, you will see growth. Many long haired naturalistas will tell you they used protective styles to get their hair to their desired length.
Please note things that hair can break (different from shedding) due to lack of moisture, over-manipulation, tension and weakened hair strands. With braids and weaves done right, you shouldn’t see breakage. Please believe Mobile Beauties is all about hair preservation and we do not play with your strands. To ensure your strands are properly moisturized, deep condition and use the LOC method before installing a protective style. Depending on your hair type, a protein treatment may also be beneficial. Keep in mind, however, that keeping braids and weaves in for too long will damage your hair. Otherwise, your hair will be fine as long as you care for it properly.
MYTH 3 – TRUE NATURALS SHOULDN’T WEAR EXTENSIONS
Well, I added this one because someone needs to know that it is perfectly okay to wear your hair anyway you want. It does not mean you are denying you identity. Enjoy your life and put on any style you want. No judgment from us. Go ahead and unleash girl, the world awaits.
Have a wonderful week!
